Tiger Lily Jodi Lynn Anderson Books

This book was somewhat of a diamond in the rough that I was aware of but didn't give any notice, until the 2015 readathon, which gave me an excuse to start it and actually finish it!

So from the prologue I was held captive because that was the exact amount of time it took me to realize that the book was told from Tinkerbell's POV and man, I didn't love anything better. This was due to awesome and truly gifted writing skills that you were able to feel through all the emotions that was present. The words practically bled into my pours!

All I shall say about the actual plot is that Tink was mute, but she was empathetic, meaning she can sense emotions and she could read thoughts. This was how Peter Pan and Tiger Lily's love story unfolded. It also gave a different meaning to how we have portrayed some of the characters that we grew up knowing. BTW I love Tink!!

Something I came to realize while reading this book is that True Love, though it's the best kind of love, all consuming where two people give part of themselves to the other, doesn't usually mean it's good for you.
Let me explain.

I have come to realize that even though everyone makes true love to be the best thing out there that doesn't necessarily means that it would make you happy. There is a love that is neglected and not always seen until we need it. The kind of love that heals, strengthens and puts a broken heart together. This love makes you a better person, or more specifically makes the person that you a stronger and more at peace with yourself. This type of love we sometimes bypass when while we are loosing ourselves in the true love that makes us forget about the people that we are and loose ourselves and our lives to.

Though it is not always like this, there are more times than none where True Loves is the greatest thing in the world, but there are moments when we forget.

Tiger Lily made me both happy and sad. This book opened my eyes in a way I didn't expect. I am a bit sad that I didn't read it before but I am glad I waited because now I can truly appreciate this book for what it is: A work of art that stole a piece of my heart.

Tiger Lily Jodi Lynn Anderson Books Reviews

Just to be clear, this is an AU retelling of the Peter Pan story. If you expect this to be a prequel or continuation of the original story, you will be disappointed. As has been mentioned by other reviewers, this version of Neverland and its inhabitants is darker and more mature. I was a bit disappointed to lose some of the magical aspect of the original, but I later realized I didn't miss it as much as I thought I would. While I was a bit apprehensive about the potential changes, I really enjoyed this interpretation. I didn't mind the slow start as I felt it allowed me to become familiar with the characters - both old and new - and their environment. It was somewhere around the 75% mark where I felt it lost momentum. There were actions that felt very out of character and events that were rushed. I also feel that the narration would have been stronger if the POV was Tiger Lily's and not Tinker Bell's.
The book about Tiger Lily and her love for Peter was interesting. I found the author's write simplistic and pure. The book was an easy, fairly quick read. I liked reading a new perspective on the familiar Peter Pan story, and this version of Tiger Lily was well done. The story is narrated by Tinker Bell, which was different.
All in all a good book, and worth the read. I didn't give it 5 stars because I felt like something was missing. I'm not sure what it is, maybe some soul to the book. Maybe it was Tinker Bell's mysterious involvement in the story, or her natural impotence to change anything when I'm used to looking at her thru Disney colored glasses. May e it was the coldness of Tiger Lily's own personality, when I was looking for more of a passionate love story. I'm not sure, but it was really just a tiny miss for me, maybe really 4 1\2 stars.
I think most Pan fans will enjoy this different angle, though!
Forget everything you have ever known about Peter Pan; the original story, the musicals, and especially the Disney version of the tale… Jodi takes components of all of those individual stories and tells her own truth about the world. And at the center of her world is Tiger Lily.

I feel that the best way to review Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson is to compose a list of things you should and should not expect prior to reading the book. I fully appreciate the story for what it is A re-imagining of the world of Neverland from the point of few of Tinker Bell… er, did I say Tinker Bell? But what about Tiger Lily? Yes, while this book is indeed titled Tiger Lily, it is narrated by none other than the little pixie that we all know as “Tink”. But I must stress, the story is about Tiger Lily so don’t worry. I guess knowing this little bit of info about the unusual narration is the first thing you should expect prior to reading the book.

Things you should expect prior to reading Tiger Lily

-- Expect this to be the darkest Neverland you have ever visited. This Neverland is a desperate place full of monsters and danger. There is no room for weaklings or for mercy and forgiveness here.
-- Expect death. And a fair amount of it. Jodi’s Neverland is just as real as the world we live in. And in the Real World, death is an inevitable part of life.
-- Expect some pretty deep thinking. There are discussions about God and Heaven, about what it means to be “different” and “unaccepted” within society as well as discussions about domestic abuse, rape and violence. Expect lots of grown-ups to appear and many serious topics to be tackled.
-- Expect to think that the book was probably inspired by The Lord of the Flies and Pocahontas, just as much as it was inspired by Peter Pan.
-- Expect to like (or at least sympathize with) characters you never thought you would like, and to dislike those you once thought of as your favorite.
-- Expect Tinker Bell to be quite the astute observer.

Things you should not expect prior to reading Tiger Lily

-- Do not expect a story full of action packed scenes or swashbuckling sword fights. This is more of a character driven story than -- Do not expect “magic”. You will discover that many of the elements that made the original story “magical” are explained with logic and reason in this book. There is much attention to detail, and in explaining the (up until now) unexplained.
-- Do not expect a clear definition of “good” and “evil”. All of the characters have ghosts in their closets. This merely goes along with the nature of the story.
-- Do not expect that your opinion of the book will ever fully agree with the opinions of others. I cannot tell you whether you will love it or hate it. I can only encourage you to give it a try. If you like thoughtful, dark and inspired reading, this may be the book for you. Who knows, Tiger Lily may surprise you just as much as she surprised me.
